What are the symptoms of AIDS?

January 20, 2008
I had sex with a guy that was a virgin. We used condoms most of the time, except for the time we had sex in the swimming pool. I need to know about the symptoms of HIV and AIDS. The condom broke one time and now I have serious questions about whether or not he was a virgin.—Anonymous
When someone is first infected with HIV, he usually experiences a rash, muscle aches, and a fever. Those only last a short time before they vanish. The next several years are traditionally spent without any symptoms at all. It is only when his immune system begins to degrade that he experiences the symptoms of all of the opportunistic infections.

Fortunately, you don't need to have a comprehensive list of the opportunistic infections. A trip to your doctor or your local health clinic can have you screened for the HIV antibodies. This will tell you if you were infected.

Whether or not you were exposed, you're obviously concerned that you may have been. Go have an HIV test so you'll be able to find out one way or another. Chances are that you're fine, and you'll feel a lot better for knowing.—Aaron Lawrence
