What are the realities of escorts, oral sex, and HIV?

January 21, 2008
I am new to the gay scene and would like to experiment by giving oral sex, but I am afraid from contracting an STD. I am clean and would like to remain that way. I would like to have oral sex without a condom. Condoms have a horrible taste to them that just stays with you. I am thinking about hiring an escort to try this with. I am not into the bar scene and would like to satisfy my curiosity in a safe manner. Do escorts wear condoms while one is giving them head? And are escorts considered safe as far as HIV and STDs are concerned? —In the Closet
Here’s a little hint before I begin my advice. It’s considered rude to call yourself "clean" when you don’t have an STD. People with HIV, herpes, or any other STD are not "dirty," "unclean," or "diseased." They have a medical condition, but that’s no reason to throw an emotional label on them. About your letter though, have you considered using flavored-condoms? Not every condom tastes bad. Lifestyles makes a great “Kiss of Mint” condom that you can buy in many stores (or just search for "mint condom" online). A flavored lubricant may make your condoms taste better, too.

Regarding condoms, I have never heard of an escort who requires condoms for oral sex. So yes, you’ll be able to fulfill your fantasy if you hire an escort. Be aware though that escorts are human like everyone else, and may have STDs that you need to protect yourself from. Although many escorts are very aware of their bodies and promptly seek treatment when infected, that is no guarantee of safety. Playing without condoms for either oral or anal sex has the risks regardless of whether a person is an escort or not.

Fortunately, oral sex is a small risk of transmission for HIV. Even if the escort had it, your chance of contracting HIV would be very low. The condom may help with other sexually-transmitted diseases though, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, and herpes.—Aaron Lawrence
