How I can I stop sex from causing my hemmerhoids?

January 21, 2008
I love getting fucked, but I've recently noticed an unbearable pain during sex. I found out that I get hemorrhoids when I work out my legs, so I stopped working out my legs entirely. Unfortunately, I now get hemorrhoids even when a big dick is shoved up my ass. I'm missing the pleasures of being a bottom. What can I do?—Anonymous
A most annoying problem! One that has a major medical component that I am not qualified to answer, so I asked a physician friend of mine for advice. He had a number of interesting thoughts for you...

Hemorrhoids that are this symptomatic will probably require a surgical procedure to fix. There are outpatient techniques in which the hemorrhoid is gathered up and a tight rubber band placed around it. This is tight enough to cut off blood supply to the hemorrhoid, and it sort of dries up and falls off, and is passed [through bowel movements] along with the rubber band. The procedure may take more than one visit depending on the severity and number of the hemorrhoids to be treated. For really severe hemorrhoids, a more extensive surgical procedure is necessary.

Having said that, I would still try, if he hasn't done so, the local therapy... that is, suppository or foam products with corticosteroids (Proctocort, Proctofoam-HC, etc.) that he would need a prescription for; combined with warm sitz baths. I would also inquire as to his general bowel habits. If he tends to be constipated, a bulk regulator like Metamucil might help avoid the pressure inside the rectum that pushes the hemorrhoids out. The necessity of adequate lubrication with anal sex also goes without saying.

Of course this doctor has not examined you, so don't take his advice as gospel. Talk to your own doctor for advice more specific to your individual needs. If you feel he/she would be uncomfortable discussing your sex life (or if you would not feel at ease discussing it with him) then you really need to find a new doctor. There are lots of ways to find a gay or gay-friendly doctor. Do a web search for "gay health care", call your local gay/lesbian info line, ask a gay friend, or even drop into a chat room for your geographical area and ask for recommendations. According to the Gay/Lesbian Medical Association website.

Talking to your doctor about having sex with men IS related to your medical care, and should be a priority when choosing a physician. Good luck with your hemorrhoids.—Aaron Lawrence
