Is barebacking as a top less risky than as a bottom?

January 21, 2008
I've noticed a lot of guys at bathhouses are not using protection. I believe a condom is the right thing to do both as a top & bottom, but I have found myself in the moment of sex as a top ready to go for it. Is an uncovered top less risky than an uncovered bottom?—Anonymous
It's extremely easy to get so turned on that you may not want to use condoms for anal sex. Unfortunately, it's still risky for transmitting HIV and other STDs. You're quite correct, it's not as risky than being a bottom. But it is still risky, and you can bring home all sorts of nasty STDs.

If you're at all concerned about medical safety, you'll want to play it safe and use a condom every time you fuck. You're likely to contract HIV from having lousy less with someone as you use a condom. It's much more likely to happen when you're having incredibly awesome sex, and you skip the condom in the heat of the moment as you sink your dick into him.

Numerically speaking, according to the January 2002 issue of Sexually Transmitted Diseasesyour risks of contracting HIV are 13 in 200,000 when you bareback as a top. That drops to 2-5 in 200,000 when you top with a condom.

So the odds are still pretty good that you'll be fine even when you bareback as a top, but when you consider the number of other STDs floating around out there you may not want to take the risk.—Aaron Lawrence
