What is the case of the small white bumps on my dick?

January 21, 2008
I have what I think is an unusual problem. The skin on my penis when erect looks somewhat like chicken skin - it has small white bumps. I've seen other men's erect penis's and they all seem to have nice smooth skin. I have never seen anyone's like mine. I suspect that this may be a case of Keratosis Pilaris, but I am not sure. Do you have any idea as to how I can make my skin as smooth as everyone else's? Thanks for your help.—Anonymous
Keratosis Pilaris is a rough, slightly bumpy skin condition usually found on the outside of the upper arms and the upper thighs. It feels sort of like dry skin, and has no other effects. It's usually prevented/treated by using moisturizing creams, although Retin-A is sometimes used for severe cases. I have it myself although I never realized it was an actual condition until I looked it up just now.

If you have the bumps just at the base of your dick where there is hair, you probably have a slight condition with the hair follicles. There may not be anything you can do about it. If the bumps go up and down the length of your dick well beyond where there is hair, then it may be something else.

Since you're concerned about it, try setting up an appointment with a urologist or a dermatologist. They'll take a look and give you a much better idea of what your bumps are than either Doctor Goldstone or I can do over the Internet.—Aaron Lawrence
