How do genital warts and hemorrhoids look different?

January 20, 2008
What is the difference in appearance between genital warts and hemorrhoids? I had some bumps on my anus checked out by a doctor and he told me they were hemorrhoids, but I'm not so sure he was right. I know I should get another opinion, but I don't have any insurance.—Anonymous
Genital and anal warts tend to appear in clusters and have a rough, cauliflower appearance. Hemorrhoids vary more in their appearance, and may be alone or with others. Hemorrhoids are usually more indicated by itching rather than their appearance.

If you are not sure which you have, go see another doctor and get his opinion. I realize insurance in an issue for you, but it's important to find out for sure. You should also have your doctor give you an anal pap smear to check for anal warts inside your anal cavity. Often men who have sex with men don't show any warts on the outside, but are filled with them internally.

Try checking out gayhealth.com for more information on both anal warts and hemorrhoids.—Aaron Lawrence
