Why do I lose my erection when I do poppers?

January 20, 2008
How come poppers make me lose my erection? I love how they make me feel, but I can't keep using them if they deflate me. What's wrong?—Anonymous
I asked one of my physicians about this. His initial response was that poppers are amyl nitrite, a substance similar to nitroglycerine and to nitric oxide, the substance produced by the lining of the blood vessels that causes dilation of the blood vessel. According to my friend, the use of poppers creates a general widening of the blood vessels, and is often experienced as a "rush" that some find pleasurable (and giving others a pounding headache).

Normally, you have an erection when the arteries (which let the blood in) in your dick widen and partially compress the veins (which take the blood back out). This traps the blood in your cock, making it stiff. Eventually the arteries return to normal, allowing the blood to exit, thus ending the erection. Large doses of "vasodilators" like poppers have the effect of widening the veins too. This can have the effect of making it an even amount of blood going in and out, or in some cases even blocking the arteries leading into your dick!

The physician suggested wearing a tight cockring to partially block the veins leading out of your dick You may also want to grip your own cock tightly at the base when fucking or being sucked - it has a similar effect and can help make your cock more stiff. My suggestion is a bit more to the point - lower the amount of poppers you're inhaling. You may be able to find a nice balance between the rush and having an erection.

Whatever you do, NEVER MIX POPPERS AND VIAGRA. The result combination can cause blackouts and in extreme cases, death.—Aaron Lawrence
