Can you have a hands-free orgasm during masturbation?

I'm 24 years old and have an interesting question about "hands free" orgasms. In the past, I always held my dick while ejaculating, and experienced the normal cycle of orgasm. But recently I experimented with stroking my dick to the point where I am about to cum, then letting go completely. Although I'd feel the usual buildup to climax just before taking my hands away, it seemed like at this point the sensation would stop as I begin to shoot my load. And then when I grasp my penis about ten seconds later the sensation of orgasm returns and is almost more intense. It kind of feels like there is a second wave to my orgasm when I do this. I don't know if the reason is psychological, because I have become so used to holding my dick while I cum. Have you ever heard of this type of reaction?
If you’re holding your dick as you orgasm then the feeling isn’t just psychological. Sure the mind plays a part, but the bottom line is that an orgasm is a physical process.
