Do female condoms work for gay sex?

January 20, 2008
Can you talk "female" condoms for anal sex? I think some bottoms would feel just a little safer with two layers of protection. But then again it may appear to be too much procedure and not enough passion for the effort. What do you do? One, two, or no layers?—Anonymous
The issue of female condoms is a tricky one. They don't sell all that well to begin with, so the manufacturers are very concerned that if they become associated with gay sex their sales will drop even further among women. That means they rarely study how effective they are for preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases through anal sex.

Logically, sure. It sounds like they would be helpful. They've been proven to be effective for vaginal sex. The trouble is that anal sex is a bit different. Could it be that they are more likely to break or tear for anal sex? I don't know, and neither does anyone else. The companies, after all, don't want that studied.

So when it comes to making the decision to use them, my suggestion is that your best is to play using traditional (male) latex condoms. If you don't want to use them for any reason, then yes, by all means go ahead and use the female condoms. You should not use a male and a female condom at the same time though. The friction between the condoms can cause them to break.

Of course, a female condom is better than nothing. If your not going to use a regular condom, use a female one instead of fucking without protection at all.—Aaron Lawrence
